When I say Winnipeg, you say cold. Right? Yeah, that's what I thought.
However, regardless of how cold it gets here, we find a way. We find a way to get our butts outside, stay active, come together and not let the dreaded winter get the best of us. A couple of Sundays ago, this attitude was perfectly displayed by the 200 skaters that #justshowedup to the Forks here in Winnipeg to participate in The Great Skate. This event is hosted by November Project Winnipeg and encourages people with all levels of skating ability to come out and participate in a 5km race on the Red River Mutual Trail.
I'm not sure what I was thinking when I was asked to wake up early on a Sunday morning, put on SKI PANTS (I hate wearing ski pants, I can't explain it!) and go outside in the minus 30-ish temperatures with my camera to capture some smiles. But holy moly, am I ever glad I did! I've attended November Project (learn more here) a few times in the warm summer months but definitely hadn't earned my Wind Chill Proof badge yet! However it's the sense of community and promotion of health and well-being that keeps these awesome people warm! (So cheesy, but I'm dead serious!)
The Skate lasted about half an hour total; some raced to win, others enjoyed a leisurely skate outside and the morning was capped off with a great brunch inside! Nuburger provided everyone who showed up with an amazing meal and The Common at the Forks hosted a great gathering place for all of these skaters to come warm up.
I'm grateful to Derek, Megan and the whole NP squad for having me out! If you hear about this event next winter, be sure to enroll and #justshowup! You're guaranteed to be cold, but you'll be glad you came!
